popdistrict: from a meeting to working sessions.
What began as one exploratory conversation is now a working rhythm: we sit down regularly with the Popdistrict collective in The Hague - a venue district of around ten stages and cafés - to shape a street-scale pilot together. On the table: which venues open their quiet hours first, what the weekly programming looks like, and how we report footfall back to the district. This is our five-circles model at the scale of a whole street.

We published the two essays that carry our model: The five circles of loneliness - how a private feeling becomes a two-billion-euro public bill - and Engineering connection - the three systems we build against friction, fear, and faith. Our two weekly anchors continue: Saturday-morning yoga by the Kralingse Bos and a Sunday-evening board-games table. Neither is large, and that is the point. The number we watch is not attendance - it is how many faces come back next week. Familiar faces are the product; everything else is logistics.

We began mapping people who already run recurring gatherings in the district - like a Saturday walking group that rounds the Kralingse Plas with its own loyal regulars. Our host rule is strict: recurring, same place, own following. One-off events don't build familiar faces, so we don't chase them.

A first exploratory meeting with the Popdistrict venue collective in The Hague about activating their quiet hours. One conversation was enough to see the fit: a street full of stages that sit silent by day, and a model built to fill exactly those hours. It became the working sessions we run today.

Introductions and first talks with Rotterdam libraries, community restaurants, and welfare organisations - the institutions that have fought loneliness in this city far longer than we have. Our opening line is always the same: we add to your work, we never replace it. Some of these conversations move slowly. They should.
two tracks, one model.
Two pilots, one loop. The Popdistrict tests our model at street scale: a whole venue district activating its quiet hours together. Kralingen in Rotterdam tests it at neighbourhood scale: walkable, mixed, saturated one anchor at a time. Different shapes, same measure of truth in both: do the same people come back next week?
